Leading up to World Gratitude Day and International Day of Peace on September 21, WeGush is highlighting some awesome nonprofits and their leaders who are doing an amazing job to help make the world a better place. Today we highlight the awesome team and program at LIFT:

The organization:
LIFT –  currently serving Los Angeles, New York, and Washington, DC.

The leader:
Kirsten Lodal, CEO and Co-Founder

The mission:
LIFT’s mission is to help families achieve economic stability and well-being. They are working to establish a new standard for holistic and enduring solutions in our country’s fight against poverty.

About LIFT:
LIFT works to lift families out of poverty for good. Their approach is people-powered—driven by a network of Members, Advocates and Advisors who work together to help people find jobs, a safe home or a good education for themselves and their kids. LIFT Members are highly motivated and committed to providing their families the opportunity to lead better lives. But they often lack the resources and networks of support they need to overcome crises and get ahead. Each of their Members gets a team of Advocates and Advisors who stick with them every step of the way. LIFT Advocates are rigorously trained partners and problem-solvers who commit to working together with Members to set goals and achieve them. They provide one-on-one support by helping identify resources, talk to service providers and develop important life skills.  By setting their own goals and working hard to achieve them, their Members are equipped to get a job, a safe home and a good education for themselves and their kids. They also build a support network, confidence in what they bring to the table and the skills to manage tough times in the future. These are the strong personal, social and financial foundations that people need to get ahead.

Why we are grateful for LIFT:
We are all about gratitude here at WeGush – it is a vital part of emotional well-being, compassion, and serenity. But so is the ability to provide for yourself and your family. What if you depended on others for everything? Sometimes, gratitude can sneak up on us and feel like a burden if we are always on the receiving end and do not have the ability to reciprocate, pay it forward. LIFT Members get the tools they need to help themselves, their families, their peers, and their communities. We are grateful that Kirsten Lodal got an assignment during her sophomore year at Yale that led to the creation of LIFT. We are grateful that the LIFT model has spread to more cities. We are grateful for the LIFT staff, advocates, and members for all the work they do to to make the world a better place!

CEO and Co-Founder Kirsten Lodal, on gratitude:
“I am grateful for the fact that I have been able to witness and be a part of the growth of LIFT, the organization I started in college to help families lift themselves out of poverty. LIFT has now touched over 100,000 families, a fact that amazes and humbles me. I am grateful for LIFT’s staff and volunteers, the people who have helped make possible the organization’s ever-increasing impact.  Their enthusiasm, diligence, and determination to change the lives of families in need is incredible. As a mom of two little ones, I am thankful every day for the support and encouragement of my own family as I have the privilege of doing my life’s work.” (Kristen is pictured above, upper left).
